Small Note Just a small thing to the people who I went to Germany with this summer (I think only Jen and Kiya): I'm trying to fill in all the holes of where we stayed. Do you guys have any information as to the name or whereabouts of: The place we stayed in Stuttgart on the second night (that really small Jugendherberge that had the Bäckerei around the corner) and the Gästhaus we stayed at in Friedrichshafen (the town on the Bodensee). Perhaps pictures would have either the name of this place or a street name I could find it by. Especially the Gästhaus, though - I would like to go back there some day, and can't find any info on it. Thanks! Micah

Sweet Tea Hello, hello A couple items for you all tonight: Firstly, for all of you still around, my brother's band out of Madison is playing here in Minneapolis on Friday night. They are playing at Memory Lanes around 9-ish, and the show is reportedly 18+. They are a really excellent band that is difficult to classify but I believe progressive rock fits the bill. Here's a couple reviews of their EP from their website:
"Despite the band's freshness, they harbor no shortage of zeal, getting themselves out in front of numerous audiences and to enthusiastic reception. Fermata's music is a blend of acoustic and electric tones and somewhat complex song structures that deviate from redundant verse-chorus structures with some success. Melody is crucial in Fermata's music and Weiland is especially prominent on vocals. ... Fermata leans toward the light, meaning that they tend toward beauty. This is a quality in short supply and the band deserves credit for being bold and attempting to paint in detail. " -Rick's Cafe
"Local band Fermata dabbles with new wave (via glockenspiel-like keyboard), prog-rock (Moody Blues, anyone?), and '80s anthems a la Pat Benatar and Heart. The confluence of these disparate styles, once filtered through the evocative vocals of Sara Weiland and songwriter Jon Koschoreck, often lead to operatic moments; there's a story to be told and the song is its conduit. A dusky forbidding atmosphere hangs over the songs on Fermata's new EP, Through the Distance and the Dark: Very little light shines through the inky soul searching, though it's apparent that a flame burns inside." -The Onion AV Club
Check out some samples of their music on their website or their MySpace.
Anyways, I really think you should come down and see them. Their shows are always awesome. Oh, my brother plays drums. Anyways, I'm specifically looking at the following people to be there: Emily K, Burton, Nikko, Adam, Maura, and you.
Secondly, I have finally gotten a cell phone. The number is 612-845-9290. So there's that.
Well, college grows closer. More later.

Barabbas For my second pre-college update, I got my housing assignment today. The surprise was that I got assigned to a single room despite applying for a double. So, that is a surprise. It is unfortunate that I won't have a roommate for my freshman year, and I would still prefer a double, but I'm content with the single. It's in Comstock Hall, which was my first choice, right on the river on the East Bank. The party is in E544.
Also, I realized that the way my classes are figured out for MWF, I have German in Folwell Hall on the East Bank 9:05 - 9:55, then Political Philosophy over on the West Bank 10:10 - 11:00, then The Political back in Folwell on the East Bank 11:15 - 12:05. Dammit.
I'm damn excited for college. I promise I'll write more soon. About crap that isn't college, and also, not in haiku form.

It may look like I'm trying to major in PoliSci, but the two politics courses were just a coincidence. Anyways, I'm disappointed that I'll have to get up for the 9:05 class every day, but I can't complain too much for first semester of freshman year. Aand now I just have to find out where I'm living. Woo! Tomorrow, Texas.

Die Bahn macht mobil. Air Canada macht nichts. Well, I made it home, in spite of Air Canada. They cancelled the Toronto - Minneapolis flight and told us we would have to wait until the 2nd before they could get us a flight back, so we rented 2 cars and did a 20 hour road trip from Toronto. But here I am. The rest of the trip continued to be amazing, and I miss Germany already. Anyways, I'm tired, but I work at 4, so once again I will be able to enjoy caffeine without paying €2.80 for 6 ounces of coffee. More later.

FKK - Freikorperkultur Here I am in another internet cafe, still in München. This time we have a small break before we check out the Deutsches Museum, have a dinner at the Hofbräuhaus, the most famous Biergarten in the world, and then go to the second spa of our trip. We opted for the Erdung Spa rather than the further away Bad Tölz. The Erdung is supposed to be an amazing place, tropically themed. I would like to say now, after messing up several times already, that if you see any errant Ys or Zs, they are reversed on the German keyboard. It reallz messes with zour head. Anyways. This will not be the first spa I have gone to in Deutschland, the first being Das Leutze in Stuttgart. Now a German Spa is quite a thing. This one had about 6 pools of various types, and more than 10 different kinds of Saunas, and various other amenities. It's a giant indoor/outdoor complex, and its only a couple of euros to spend a few hours there. Anyways, There are two or three pools immediately available, but for everything else, you must go to the back. This area is FKK, Freikorperkultur, which means free body culture. In short, it means: everybody gets nekkid. This was a great European experience. If you have never laid down in a lawn chair, completely naked, in the middle of a large public area, you are missing out. The spas are amazing too. They are different temperatures, with different scents, different themes. It is quite a rush to spend 10 minutes in the 100°C sauna and then rush over to the freezing cold pool, all of your limbs flying free in the process. I was surprised, though, in that I didn't really have anz reservations in stripping down. You really just fit right in. Anyways, here in München, we spent a day at the Englischer Garten. Think Central Park, NYC. Biergartens scattered about within, it's just a giant park to bike, walk, relax, play some soccer in the nude, that kind of thing. I could really get used to this place.

Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole! USA, USA! Well, I sit here in München, or Munich, and it the trip is going very well. Last night, USA played Italy in the World Cup. The game was not held in München, but in every German city, there is a giant "Weltmeisterschaft Fan Club", where there is a large outdoor arena or amphitheater and a giant screen where people come to watch the game. Well, seeing as how Italy is just a short train ride away, we figured the US needed as much support as we could muster. So, we headed down to Olympiazentrum. The first thing we did was to all buy some €10 American flags which we promptly tied as capes around our back. I was a bit leery on spending the money on the flag at first, but it would turn out to be essential to the evening. Immediately, people from many different countries would start chanting "USA! USA!" as soon as they saw us, or come over and talk to us. People wanted to get pictures with us. It would seem that no one really likes the Italians. Anyways, our next objective was to find some fellow Americans to rally with. We found about 5 others sitting in the giant arena -- imagine an arena of literally thousands of Italians and 5 Americans. We talked with them for a while, and then decided to go down to the center of the arena. There was a large arena and then right in front of the stage a separated flat place. We, the 10 Americans, decided to go down into this area and make our presence known. So, there we were, being as loud and routy as possible in the middle of an insanely large arena. Before the game they had cameras that showed people in the audience (think Jumbotron) and we got shown several times. We were going absolutely crazy, chanting, running laps with the American flag, and so on. Then, we made a request to the MC of the pregame festivities to ask all of the American fans down to the very front of the arena. The 10 of us Americans would eventually become 100. The MC commented that if the team had as much energy as us fans, the Americans would be fine. And then the game started. About 10 minutes in, Italy scored the first goal, which was a disappointment. However, shortly after, we got a beautiful goal and we all went batshit. Basically, we wildly hugged anyone in sight, I got beer all over me. We were amped. There were some bullshit calls against the Americans, and in the end, those would be the only two goals of the game. After the game, we shook some hands with the Italians, and took the subway home, flags still tied to our backs. It was an amazing experience, though, and something I will never forget. Pictures will be forthcoming. Everything else is well in Germany. I hope all the best for Minneapolis.
